On Friday, Dec. 6, the Music Production classes hosted their bi-annual Music Production showcase in 2104 and the West Auditorium, the culmination of the student work created in class. Students both performed live on stage and showcased their produced songs through presentations on their computers.
Music Production Showcase is an event intended for each student to demonstrate their favorite project from class. Students create multiple pieces of music over the course of the semester, and they have the option of performing a multitude at the showcase, based on approval.
“Depending on the class they are in, there are specific projects we do with different themes that help them generate ideas,” Music Production teacher Madeline Vogler said. “[There are multiple projects like the] sampling project and the activist songwriting project.”
Students performed songs that were selected on an application basis, and many chose to perform songs from these projects. Clara Cavacanti ’25 said she selected a song about the activist project she was passionate about – a very touching song to her.
“I wrote [the song] about a month before [the performance],” Cavacanti said. “I knew right away that I wanted to play [that song].”
Not every student who writes and composes music chooses to perform in the showcase, however. According to Vogler, students have the opportunity to come up with unique performances that Vogler said she had not seen before.
“Most of the time, everyone who completes the application presents or performs at [the] showcase,” Vogler said. “The West Aud is original music only, but cover songs can be performed in 2104 or the hallway.”
Vogler splits the performances to ensure that the songs that are played are unique and showcase the abilities of each performer. She feels that providing certain spaces to each musician helps foster a supportive community for the students in the showcase.
“[I love] seeing the students support every single artist [and] band regardless of what is being showcased [or] performed,” Vogler said. “It’s an environment that is welcoming to all musicians and all music.”
