Stevenson’s varsity girls tennis closed their season with a 2nd place finish in the IHSA state finals. During their season, their record consisted of 12-0, with a 7-0 record in conference, securing themselves as NSC champions, with students Abby Ma and Sophia Shlykhta becoming the 7th Stevenson’s girls double team to finish top 3 in state.
Head Varsity Coach Izriz Balase feels proud of how the team adapted throughout the season. He notes how the team improved together, especially at key moments such as the state tournament.
“We set the bar high at the start of the season, and understood that it wasn’t going to be easy,” Balase said. “There were challenges along the way with some tough losses, but we responded by learning and adapting to prepare for the pressure at State.”
Varsity Tennis player Sasha Baer ‘25 agrees with Balase, and fondly recalls her favorite memories of the team. According to Baer, the team community went beyond just the competition season as she got to bond with the rest of athletes.
“One of my favorite memories was playing team bonding games, especially the Olympic-style tournament we held in practice. It was a fun way to strengthen our team and make lasting memories” Baer said.
While Baer is happy with how the season went, she has ideas on how the team can further improve. Even though she is a senior, she continues to advocate for team wellness.
“Being conference and sectional champs, along with earning runner-up at the state tournament brought the entire team together, whether we were on the court or cheering for a teammate,” Baer said. “Our team’s community is very supportive, like a family. Win or lose, we always lift each other up and show great sportsmanship.”
Balase agrees with Baer, and is pleased about the current team community. However, he is actively incentivizing the team to have a close knit relationship with each other.
“Our team’s community is close, but we’re also looking for opportunities to strengthen the team’s bond each year,” Balase said. “We emphasize doing things together, and would like to keep that culture consistent for years to come.”
As for the tennis season itself, Balase predicts yet another successful season next year. According to Balase, many victories are set to come.
“Next season we’ll be in contention for another team trophy at State.” Balase said.
